Russian Paris

In this essay, Reader John (Richard) McLaughlin traces the impact of the Russian Revolution on the church, a history in which our own Orthodox Church in America shares a unique part.

The Bolshevik coup of October 1917 and victory in the ensuing civil war triggered a massive exodus of Russians from their native land.  According to data compiled by the League of Nations, over a million fled the war, pestilence and famine then engulfing the country between 1917 and 1920.

Join us for our Parish Picnic!

Sunday July 22 is our annual Parish Picnic following Liturgy! Food and drink will be in ample supply, so please be sure to bring yourself, some comfortable clothes, and invite family and friends – all are welcome. Additionally, in continuation of the feast of the Holy Prophet Elijah (Friday, July 20) we will mark the celebration with the traditional blessing of cars and other vehicles following the veneration of the cross. We look forward to seeing you there!

Roof & Cupola Project Underway

We were happy to mark the beginning of construction on our roof and cupola project, today, after some weather delays. The north half of the roof has been completely installed, and the cupola is ready to be loaded onto a boom lift tomorrow afternoon. Our deep thanks and gratitude to all those who generously donated to help make this project possible. A few photos from today’s work can be found on our Facebook page, here.

Metropolitan Tikhon Visits St. Andrew’s

On Sunday, March 11, our parish was honored to host His Beatitude, Tikhon, Archbishop of Washington and Metropolitan of All America and Canada, who is visiting parishes on Long Island during this Great Lent this year. Assisting His Beatitude as he led us in the celebration of the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy were Archdeacon Joseph Matusiak and Subdeacon Mark Federoff, whose assistance was invaluable in the prayerful and graceful service. Following the Liturgy, His Beatitude led the faithful in venerating the Holy Cross, and shared a festive lenten meal with all. Photos of the visit may be viewed here. (Many thanks to our photographer, Edna Fetkowitz.)
